Triumphant TR4A IRS!
![]()
0-60mph in 11 seconds
110mph top speed
Next time you're swaning around in that sporty modern car, luxuriating in the six speed 'box thinking you're the bee's knees, bear in mind our 1966 TR4 has 7 forward gears - stick that in your tail pipe and smoke it. No, it hasn't got a gear knob with a diagram like the Tube map and it doesn't do 250 mph. Those extra ratios come in the form of an easily slip in and outable overdrive, effectively giving you 'half gears' on second third and forth making town and country driving a cinch.
The TR4A is a very special car. With a torquey four cylinder 2,138cc engine, this 40 year old car will hit 110 mph given the right roads and nerves of steel and actually handles very well for it's day, thanks to the Independent Rear Suspension (IRS) and rack and pinion steering.
Our car is a full convertible, as opposed to the fiddly Surrey top version and looks splendid in Wedgewood Blue. The TR4 enjoys such luxuries as wind up windows, an opening rear boot and adjustable fascia ventilation - mere flights of fancy for the TR3 owner.
Forget the figures though, the most important thing - this is a sexy car; see the Triumph advertising blurb from 1967 below:
Gentlemen, if you are courting this is the car for you. With it's disarming smile and sharp lines, complimented by a perfect colour coordination for a man of taste and style, the subject of your affection will swoon long before you reveal that big powerful lump under your bonnet. And ladies your beau will not fail to be stirred as you tame and master this rugged hairy-chested beast, with its wild throbbing four pot and snarling exhaust note. - (Triumph c. 1967)
There you go, take this baby out and it would seem you cannot fail. A little pre trip visit to Agent Provocateur may be in order?
