Subaru

Bred from rally expertise. 4 wheel drive 'Q' car.

Success in the world of motor sport can transform a manufacturer's fortunes. Subaru of Japan is a fine example of this. Prior to the late 1980's Subaru were known for making strong and capable four wheel drive cars and utility vehicles. With the introduction of the Legacy and Subaru's first forays into rallying, came prestige and kudos the like the manufacturer had never experienced. In 1993, based on the Legacy chassis, the new Impreza, with its shorter lighter body, exploited the full potential of the Legacy's already fine handling capabilities. A torquey two litre, turbo charged, horizontally opposed boxer engine, produced, in standard form, 208 bhp.

As with the Audi Quattro, the four wheel drive system of the Subaru produced incredible levels of grip, making it point to point across country and almost unbeatable package. However, despite its rally conquering capabilities, the Impreza had one other very powerful weapon in its armory. In 1994, Ford had the very capable Sierra and Escort Cosworths, but they were at least £8,000 more expensive than the Impreza! At £17,499, the Impreza offered unmatched levels of performance, which, along with Colin McRea's success in the world championship, (the team won the constructor title three years in a row), guaranteed a huge following.

With its appearance as a medium sized conventional saloon, the Impreza with its strong performance and superior handling is a modern day 'Q' car, a true wolf in sheep's clothing.
