The Volvo P1800 was designed by the design house Ghia. It's exotic lines are more akin to1960's Italian exotica than the robust and sober sensibilities of the Swedish manufacturer. The car struggled into life overcoming opposition from Volkswagen who persuaded Karmann not to take on the project for fear of competition.

Sometimes in life you just need a bit of luck and Volvo's came in 1962. Jaguar declined to supply it's new E-Type for a new TV show, The Saint, leading to the P1800 being chosen as Simon Templer's wheels of choice creating a motoring icon over night.

A 1966 Volvo P1800 owned by Irvin Gordon of New York holds the record for the highest mileage car in a single ownership having chalked up a staggering 2.6 million miles by 2004!
